Plant Protection Conference - the 62nd Scientific Session of the Institute of Plant Protection – National Research Institute „The European Green Deal and the future of plant protection”

On February 16-18, 2022, the Plant Protection Conference - the 62nd Scientific Session of the Institute of Plant Protection - National Research Institute (IPP – NRI) was held in Poznań. The session was primarily concerned with the practical aspects of implementing the European Green Deal and the impact of these regulations on the future of plant protection in Poland. The Plant Protection Conference was carried out remotely for the second time, but for the first time free of charge, which resulted in the media range of the event.

Over 800 active users on the conference platform, 13 300 plays of streams on YouTube and Facebook, almost 40 000 reach of conference posts on Facebook and Twitter, 65 speeches and 94 posters - this is how the numbers can be summed up in the 62nd Scientific Session of the IPP – NRI.

The honorary patronage over the Plant Protection Conference was taken by: Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - Henryk Kowalczyk, Minister of Science - Przemysław Czarnek, Voivode of Wielkopolska - Michał Zieliński, Polskie Stowarzyszenie Ochrony Roślin  (Polish Association for Plant Protection), Polskie Towarzystwo Ochrony Roślin (Polish Society for Plant Protection) and Wielkopolska Izba Rolnicza (Chamber of Agriculture of Wielkopolska). The main sponsor of the event was Syngenta, and the main media patron of APRA – Polska Prasa Rolnicza. The media patrons of the Plant Protection Conference also include: TVP3 Poznań, Radio Poznań, Farmer.pl, "Sady i Ogrody", "Agro Profil", portals: Wiadomości Rolnicze Polska, akademiarzepaku.pl, e-agrotechnika.pl.

The leading slogan of the Plant Protection Conference was: "The European Green Deal and the future of plant protection". The organizers and invited guests referred to the motto during the opening of the Scientific Session, which took place on February 16, 2022, at the IOR Hotel & Congress Center. The conference was officially opened by acting Director of the Institute of Plant Protection - National Research Institute, Ph.D. Roman Kierzek, Assoc. Prof. of IPP - NRI.

The opening ceremony was also attended by: Anna Gembicka - Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nina Dobrzyńska - Director of the Plant Breeding and Protection Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Andrzej Kotecki - Deputy Chairman of the Agricultural Sciences Group of the Scientific Excellence Council at the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław, Andrzej Chodkowski - Main Inspector of Plant Health and Seed Inspection, Sybren Vos, representative of EFSA Parma, Katarzyna Floryanowicz-Czekalska representing the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate and Joanna Gałązka from the Polish Plant Protection Association. On that day, there were also two discussion panels: "Precision agriculture and modern tools in plant protection" and "Non-chemical methods in plant protection".

The proceedings on February 17, began with a poster session - 94 interesting posters presented entirely online (only participants registered on the conference platform had access to this part of the conference). Then the following panels started: "Main Inspectorate of Plant Health and Seed Inspection - innovation, integration, cooperation, "IPP – NRI - plant protection and food safety - tasks carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development", "Phytopathology", "Safety of people and the environment" and "Ecological farming and protection of beneficial organisms”. On that day, the "Science - Consulting - Practice" Forum was also held.

At the end of the session, Ph.D. Roman Kierzek, Assoc. Prof. of IPP – NRI, acting Director of the Institute of Plant Protection - National Research Institute, summed up the 62nd Scientific Session and invited participants to the next edition in February 2023.

      -  The Plant Protection Conference is the only event where scientists have a possibility to present their projects and achievements to a wider group of people, and at the same time learn how the implementation of previous achievements works in practice. That is why it is so important to maintain the dual track of this event - as an arena for presenting scientific achievements in agriculture and as a place where practical solutions for use in crops are also presented. We hope that the next, the 63rd Scientific Session will be held stationary. Perhaps, in a slightly modernized formula, but in a form that favors direct exchanges of views, also during backstage talks - said Ph.D. Roman Kierzek, Assoc. Prof. of IPP – NRI.

The last day of the Plant Protection Conference was intended to accompanying events: the Seed Forum, organized and sponsored by the Polish Seed Chamber, and the Adjuvant Forum - sponsored and organized by Agromix and Ciech Sarzyna.

- This year, access to the Plant Protection Conference events was free. We wanted to reach as many recipients as possible with this - quite strongly profiled - knowledge. The sheer number of participants - over 800 people on the conference platform - proves the great potential of IPP - NRI Scientific Sessions and how popular the topics discussed during them are – summarized acting Director of IPP - NRI.
