Project description: Many terrestrial gastropods (slugs and snails) are recognized as invasive species worldwide. The introduction and subsequent spread of several European pest species of slugs to other countries demonstrate their excellent capacity for dispersal by anthropogenic means. They are often introduced accidentally, being easily transported on various materials. Non-indigenous and invasive terrestrial gastropods often have profound negative impacts on local ecosystems and can cause damage to crops. Slugs and snails may also be vector of pathogens and are best known as intermediate hosts of parasites of animals.

Among non-indigenous terrestrial gastropods, large slug species belonging to the genus Arion are particularly noxious in Europe and North America. Arion vulgaris is considered to be one of the hundred most invasive alien species in Europe. It has gradually spread from Southern Europe to Central and North Europe in the last 4–5 decades.

We propose to study climate change as a major factor contributing to further expansion of A. vulgaris as a model to predict further spread of other invasive species with increase environmental temperature. By studying the slug’s parasites, we will discover the most common parasites of Arion and will explore mode of parasites’ spread along with invasive species. We will also aim to find novel biological control agents of A. vulgaris possible to apply in future and thus contributing to non-toxic environmentally friendly alternatives for pest management.
