The Regional Experimental Station Institute of Plant Protection – NRI in Rzeszów conducts studies on broadly defined protection of plants against pests as part of their commercial and research activity. The conducted experiments are aimed not only at identifying harmful organisms in crops, but especially at assessing their harmfulness, together with indicating the most effective methods of population control with the use of integrated plant protection. The results of the studies constitute a basis for creating new or updating the existing recommendations for the protection of plants against pests. Much attention is paid to the issues of protection of maize and sweet corn plantations, cereals, field beans, peas, sorghum and other plants against pests.

In their research, the Station deals not only with conventional agriculture, but also with organic farms located in south-eastern Poland and those operating within the integrated production system (IP).

The IPP – NRI station in Rzeszów is also one of the few units in Poland where specialist scientific and commercial studies on the Western corn rootworm larvae and beetles (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera Le Conte) and the European corn borer caterpillars (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.) are carried out. The unit has access to maize fields cultivated in multiannual monocultures and in rotation, and thus is able to differentiate the occurrence and harmfulness of many maize pests, including the acquisition of many species for laboratory and isolator experiments.

Some of the studies are related to the registration of new, or extending the scope of application of, plant protection products used to protect agricultural crops against weeds, pests and diseases. The studies are carried out on the basis of procedures under the Good Experimental Practice system supervised by the IPP – NRI Agrochemicals Registration Testing Centre in Poznań.

The Field Experimentation Team conducts registration testing of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides in agricultural crops, with specialization in corn, cereals and potatoes.
