Department of Biological Pest Control

Profile of the Department

Department of Biological Pest Control has gained its present organizational status in 1992. It continues the research activity of former Laboratory of Biological Control (1960-1966), Laboratory of Insect Pathology and Laboratory of Entomophagous Organism at the Department of Pests and Diseases Control (1967-1991) and Laboratory of Field Experimentation (1978-1991) of the Institute of Plant Protection in Poznan, Poland. The main research areas include studies on the role played by entomophagous insects, spider mites, entomopathogenic nematodes and microorganisms in reduction of pest insects populations, and improvement of their strains and application methods for biological and integrated programs of plant protection. The research is dedicated to environmentally safe control of pests of open-field, greenhouse, mushroom house, and orchard cultures, as well as urban forest and park trees. A separate, important sector of the Department objectives constitute problems of plant quarantine.
During 1991 - 2001 employees of the Department have published 382 research paper, short articles, and chapters in books and monographs. They have received 11 research grants and international scholarships. They have presented results of their research in many national and international conferences, frequently as invited speakers. During the period of 1998 - 2000 three Ph.D. scientists obtained their Doctor Habilitowany degree. Employees of the Department have also obtained four patents and a number of prestigious national and international awards for results of their research.
