  • Biology and control of pests of main field crops (cereals, potato, sugar beet, rape, seed grass, legumes).

  • Monitoring of changes in pest populations dealing with diversified changes in natural environment, especially climatic change.

  • Detection of new plant pest agents of field crops and monitoring of their spread.

  • Monitoring of territorial expansion of aphids – virus vectors as a consequence of climate change; prevention of cereal crops against Barley yellow dwarf virus.

  • Examination of aphid species composition in Poland.

  • Evaluation of biological efficiency of insecticides.

  • Developing detection methods of storage pests with the use of molecular techniques.

  • Influence of natural substances (attractants and antifeedants) on insects as alternative measures of chemical control.

  • Studies on the effect of mould fungi infesting grain and seeds of  cultivated plants on the development and feeding of storage pest insects.

  • Studies on resistance of  storage pest insects to insecticides used for their control.

  • Development and update of insect collection database covering several thousand of taxa.

Main achievements

  • Evidence of anholocyclic forms of bird-cherry aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi L.) and expansion tendencies.

  • Collection of records for one of the oldest database on aphids, caught by Johnson’s suction trap.

  • Description of life cycle and harmfulness determination of important dipteran species (Dicraeus vagans, Contarinia bromicola, Dicraeus tibialis) occurring on seed grasses.

  • Preparation of method for testing natural substances and synthetic compounds for their utilization as insect attractants and antifeedants.

  • Examination of several hundreds of natural substances and synthetic compounds considering their attractant and repellent action.

  • Development of detection methods for grain latent infestation (molecular, SKCS, immunochemical) by an important store pest – grain weevil (Sitophilus granarius).

  • Determination of biological characteristics of saponins and other secondary plant compounds in relation to Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata).

  • Determination of a dominant role of wheat grain surface wax in grain detection by beetles of grain weevil.

  • Testing of biological properties of insecticides recommended for storage pest control in accordance with Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

  • Elaboration of alternative methods in order to replace a withdrawn compound - methyl bromide.

  • Expert opinions on occurrence of storage pests in food products.

  • Elaboration of course books, atlases and keys for identification of crop and storage pests.

  • Professional counselling, expert’s report and courses (workshops) in the field of entomology.
